Here’s to the Fact that I’ll be Sad Without You

“Here’s to the fact that I’ll be sad without you” – an excerpt from the song Have It All by Jason Mraz

This is one that I’ve been mentally preparing for since about this time last year! My oldest son was still a junior in high school then, but I would see school notifications for senior events, and I’d get so overwhelmed with emotions. “That’ll be us next year!” I would think to myself. I used to get immediately teary.

But strangely enough, right now, all I feel is excitement and gratitude for him. During the past year, we had opportunities to talk more openly than we ever did before. And that has really made me proud of who this young man has become. I feel confident that he is prepared to face the world on his own. Yes, he will still face challenges, but I have faith that he’ll face them with dignity. He will know to use those experiences to learn and grow.

I certainly will miss being around him everyday. But that’s not the same as being sad. Even when he was little, I raised him knowing that I was only given a temporary custody of a beautiful soul. He was here to teach me just as much as I was to teach him, if not more. So, I am incredibly grateful to be able to call him my son. But I also know that it is time for me to share this amazing human being with the rest of the world. And that’s a good thing. I can’t possibly be sad.
