I Toast You!
“I toast you!” – an excerpt from the song Have It All by Jason Mraz
Does time feel real to you? May is almost over, and this year’s A Month of Mays is coming to a close soon. Revisiting this challenge all month, I had many opportunities to recall memories from 6 years ago. Clearly, there are many differences. The children are much bigger. My oldest was a middle schooler then, and now he’s graduating high school. My daughter just surpassed my height this month. And the youngest, who wasn’t even in school at the time, is now finishing 4th grade.
This, my mind can handle. I watched them grow, slowly but surely, for the last 6 years. I can accept that my kids are bigger. But do you know what’s actually boggling my mind right now? Avocado toast!
Six years ago, apparently, avocado toast still wasn’t a thing. Jason being an avocado farmer, I surely would have added an avocado fedora to this picture if avocado toast was popular. But alas, I chose to draw a simple toast. So avocado toast was probably just something a handful of people ate just because they liked avocado on everything. Not something that sits on every menu at a fancy cafe.
It’s strange how something so little can suddenly trigger you to recognize the passing of time. We might not be paying much attention to time, but we can’t ever stop its flow. The person who started out this month as Sono is not the same person that I am now. My cells have changed, my thoughts have changed, my emotions have changed. And it’s the same for everyone else on this planet.
Change is how we recognize the passing of time. A lot of people struggle with change, but change is built into how the world works. The stress you feel during a change is created by your resistance to change. If you want to have less drama in your life, I think being open to change is the best way to go.
